Zoo York is teaming up with Mike Giant and the New York youth organization Stoked Mentoring to produce some limited edition skateboard decks and t-shirts. They are all designed by Giant with profits going to Stocked which has been supported by Zoo York for quite some time. They go on sale in June and will have a release party on June 6th. So if you’re socially conscious or a supporter of the arts this is a must have. You can’t go wrong with these goods!

I love it. I think it’s awesome in fact. Calling all Rutgers, if the WNBA doesn’t come your way, there is life after basketball.

Camille Rose Garcia Exhibit

May 6, 2007

Camille Rose Garcia is having her first solo exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Art from May 12th till September 23rd. Her show is called “Tragic Kingdom”.

The Show Description:

  • Garcia’s work stems from growing up in the suburbs of Orange County and making frequent visits to Disneyland, “the happiest place on earth.” The artist quickly grew to recognize its artifice and contradictions, and she witnessed the realities of privileged suburban life - adolescent alienation and social marginalization. Her precious glittered compositions are infused with a sense of discontent, yielding works that are simultaneously disturbing and attractive.
  • Garcia is a notable member of a Los Angeles underground contemporary art movement known as the “Pop Surrealists” or “Lowbrow” artists, who combine dark surrealism with an eclectic array of pop culture sources, including comics, animation, and 1950s television. Garcia is particularly influenced by Walt Disney, punk bands like the Dead Kennedys, and sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick. In addition, she draws upon diverse artistic and cultural sources, such as the work of her former teacher Paul McCarthy, illustrations by nineteenth-century artist Aubrey Beardsley, myths and fairy tales, and Japanese art, specifically traditional woodblock prints and the anime inspired work of Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami. From these references, she has crafted both a style that is unique and content that is a good deal more political than the work of her contemporaries.

Ink Film-Based on Mister Cartoon

April 26, 2007

Here’s a quick glimpse of the movie “Ink” based on Mr. Cartoon, his work, and the relationship between it and the hip-hop community by Estevan Oriol. He is probably the most famous tattoo artist I can think of. His tattoos are known all over. The fact of the matter is, he is a celebrity tattoo artist. So ultimately they’re going to get shown. It’s like when a celebrity dons a designer shirt, for example: Pharrell pimps the shit out of bbc, you see them everywhere & now they’re real hot. You see it on a celebrity suddenly it gets status. (Kanye=LRG skeleton hoodie=same thing) He does have a grimey dirty raw edge to his art though, that you automatically want to associate with the Los Angeles hardcore gangster lifestyle thats being flashed everywhere. The film looks very interesting except for the celebrity shout outs and name dropping that is no doubt through out the whole entire movie.

Smiling Yellow Cats

April 17, 2007

yellow-cat.jpg

One of the greatest most infamous graffiti artists, Monsieur Chat, straight out of Paris, was arrested in the City of Orleans and now is facing three years in jail. THREE YEARS! His trial starts on May 10th. He is the creator of the world famous smiling yellow cats. There was also a film by Chris Marker that came out entitled “The Case of the Grinning Cat” all about his street art. There has been plenty of support by the local residents and they are proud of their smiling cat history. But the laws are clear and he could be put in jail now. Three years for drawing cute little cats?

Inks has a lot of real interesting totes. I’m not a fan of totes but these are pretty cool. They are only $20 bucks. There are a few other designs too. They also sell stickers and buttons with the same patterns and other ones. Check them out here.

We Should Have Ordered Chin-Yellow

April 12, 2007

nig.jpg

The title reads “Racial slur on sofa label stuns family - Mother had to explain to daughter, 7 origin of ‘totally unacceptable’ word on wrapping of furniture built overseas” (Toronto Star). Apparently when Ms Doris Moore received her new sofa set the color on the label said “Nigger-Brown.” And her daughter said, ‘Mommy, what is nig … ger brown”. I’m guessing the dot dot dot is a stutter. And then she had to explain to her young daughter this tough horrid situation about race and the world and blah blah blah blah blah. I don’t know man, I just keep laughing. I can just see it now, little miss Moore, pigtails and a cabbage patch doll in her hand with her cutesy little brown eyes asking her momma, what is nigger brown? It cracks me up. The girl never heard the word in her life living in a black home? What a load of bull shit. What a load of shit. Momma, what is cracker white? I should probably take offense to this ATROCITY but I just find myself cracking up. I don’t know, Ms. Doris looks pretty pissed even with her green eye shadow and negro brown crayoned (yes, its a word) eyebrows.
